How reading time is estimated
Reading time is derived from word count using an average silent reading speed (around 200–250 words per minute), while speaking time uses a slower pace (around 130–150 words per minute) because people talk more slowly than they read. The estimates give a realistic sense of length for your audience.
Why show reading time?
Displaying an estimated reading time sets expectations and can improve engagement — readers are more likely to start an article when they know it is a quick read. For speakers and presenters, the speaking estimate helps you fit a script into a time slot.
Frequently asked questions
What reading speed is used?
The estimate is based on an average adult silent reading speed of roughly 200–250 words per minute, with a slower rate used for speaking aloud.
Why are reading and speaking times different?
People read silently faster than they speak. The speaking estimate uses a slower words-per-minute rate to reflect a natural talking pace.
